Barroso wants to tax energy waste

dpa Today, 03:56

Hamburg (dpa) - The European Commission has announced an initiative for the taxation of environmental pollution and energy waste. One must approach this issue, said Commission President José Manuel Barroso the `Hamburger Abendblatt´. Concrete proposals for such a green taxation should be still present in this year. In companies and households is wasted an incredible amount of energy. As a negative example Barroso called air conditioners.

.

Note this: Mr Barroso is m. E. undoubtedly right and V-all should appreciate his moral support. But how should it be possible to identify energy wastage and in addition to tax ...?

30/04/2010

Washington - A new chapter in U.S. energy policy is set up: After years of discussion are Interior Minister Ken Salazar green light for the first American marine wind farm. The project with 130 wind turbines will be built in Nantucket Sound waters off the coast of the exclusive peninsula of Cape Cod, Massachusetts."With this decision, we propose a new direction for our future energy strategy," Salazar said on Wednesday. Environmentalists welcomed the approval. Greenpeace said: "The wind of change blowing through the United States."
The 130 turbines will cover several miles off Cape Code over a sea area of about 65 square kilometers. The individual wind turbines are part of a height of 40-story skyscrapers, and so have all the buildings on Cape Cod by a multiple tower above reported that the TV station.

Conventional power stations would make for the same amount of power around 700 000 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year into the air. This corresponds roughly to the amount of greenhouse gases, which make 175 000 cars a year. should follow more offshore wind farms in the U.S., announced Salazar.

Obama wants to change course in energy policy as a lesson from oil spill
Wednesday 2 June 2010, 08:56

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama will draw conclusions from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico - may also appear if the number of compatriots too late. Obama now wants to drive the domestic controversial law on climate change and to promote alternative energy sources.
The U.S. dependence on fossil fuels and the continuing risks of oil production could be "one way" for future energy policy of the USA - namely a tax on pollution by carbon dioxide (CO2), Obama said on Wednesday in Pittsburgh, according to advance common speech excerpts.
The President acknowledged that a bill currently enjoys does not yet have the necessary majority of 60 of the 100 votes in the U.S. Senate. "The votes are not yet there, but I have the intention to collect in the coming months," he said. He announced his intention to cooperate with the Republicans. "We will create it," said  Obama
The Americans would have to admit, given the devastating disaster in the Gulf of Mexico that can not only meet the energy demand of fossil fuels. The time has come, "that this country has a future with cleaner energy really takes," Obama said, "The next generation must not be hostage to the energy of the last century."
Obama had his office last year started with the claim that the U.S. take a leadership role on climate change and how other developed countries should also establish a system of emissions trading. The House of Representatives has already passed a similar bill in the Senate, however, the project is on the spot. The opposition Republican, but some senators are afraid of Obama Democrats, a stamp duty to high burden on firms.

Energy study: 80 percent could be from renewable in 2050

of 6-8-2010

According to a study renewable energies (Erneuerbare Energien) could cover 80 percent of the worldwide energy requirement to 2050. Greenpeace and the European holding organization (EREC) explained to the industry for renewable energies the savings could finance the reorganization completely for the import of fossil sources of energy like oil, coal and gas.

The study prepared by the German centrum for aerospace (DLR) therefore provides a concept as the supply can be adapted to the increasing worldwide energy consumption without endangering the climate protection.

According to the DLR study 95 percent of the electric-power supply (Stromversorgung) could be from renewable energies to 2050. By the reorganization the fuel costs for oil, coal and gas would therefore drop by almost five trillions euros alone to 2030.

From this the additional costs could be financed for the reorganization of the energy supply according to the study. This way the sales volume of the line of business could therefore increase from currently 80 billion euros to over 480 billions euro and the number of the jobs of currently 2 increase to 8.5 million - a million of it in Germany.

.

"Question of the political will"

Greenpeace invited the governments, " to invest in the necessary reorganization of the energy supply, instead (of) into ecologically harmful and dangerous energy sources like oil, coal or nuclear energy, ". Politics and business should money "invest in people and jobs instead of into fuels". No question of technology the holding organization EREC emphasized, which is rearrangement of the energy supply "but the political will ". The federation EREC said, the conversion of energy "was not a question of technique, but of political will."

The bill comes later

Buying a flat screen television (Flachbildfernsehers) can be more expensive than you think. For the price tag is only half the truth. Only with the cost of electricity (Stromkosten) together shows how expensive the TV entertainment at the end really is. A list of the Federal Environment and Conservation (BUND) shows: Some TV consumed in the course of its life in the current value of twice the purchase price.
In the household energy guzzlers TV the energy bill burden similar to traditional large energy consumers, such as refrigerator, washing machine or electric cooker. The problem: The fuel consumption for these appliances are not in classes, however, televisions and well comparable.

BUND leads usage summary

The Association for Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) leads a usage summary for televisions, which can be a valuable help. Since December 2009, it is available in an updated version. It lists a total of 364 models, based on manufacturer's specifications or measurement results from Stiftung Warentest. BUND calculated the annual consumption by an assumed daily usage of four hours and requires a lifetime of ten years. Many TVs even hold much longer, which reduces the importance of the purchase price in relation to the cost of electricity on. Also important is the consumption in stand-by, the BUND includes in the bill. Even an off button is embodied in the calculation.

Values are not always comparable

The large number of models it is impossible to subject each device a comprehensive test. Where there is no consumption value measured it under real conditions, it must rely on the Bund to the manufacturer's instructions. This makes a comparison - the manufacturer's instructions are, by nature optimistic. So is the power consumption specified by the manufacturer already high, the probability is high that it is also an electricity hog. At very low data, the assessment is difficult. The TV manufacturers often not as they come on the value specified. Some people call only one value, others more than one, under various conditions. Also suffers from the comparison.

They are power hungry

Negative falls on the Bund, for example, list the LG 42PQ3000. The 42-inch plasma TV is to buy with less than 600 € very cheap. But the cost of electricity in ten years, add up to more than 1000 €. Still draws more juice from the outlet of the Samsung PS63B680T6 - 1327 € in ten years of additional revenue for the power company of its owner calculated the BUND. However, the Samsung TV is one with 160 cm screen also one of the largest TV screens at all.

Power consumption not only depends on size

A criterion that determines the power consumption is the size - with identical technique a larger image, is automatically more power. That with increasing size, power consumption increases automatically across all models is not true. More important are often quite different criteria, such as whether the technology is up to date. Many modern TVs have sensors and switch the picture is dark when nobody is there or base their brightness to the living room light. Even in stand-by mode, they are more economical than discontinued models. A power switch also affects the energy balance - provided the owner makes use of him.

Sensors save power

Increasingly, today's LCD TVs with LED-backlit display. Optimal use of LED application saves a lot of power. Other factors such as the Philips Ambilight consumption increase, however, as lamps are now included outside the display area. Many integrated receiver also increase the electricity bill. However, if you need to run instead of the lack of an integrated receiver, an external receiver, use the great consumption of the TV nothing. This also applies to any switched-boxing, if the integrated speaker sounds too thin.

Obama declares clean energy "national mission"

of 6-16-2010

The President`s speech to the nation:

Obama wants to use the oil pollution to

forward clean Energies. (Photo: Reuters)

As a consequence from the oil pollution (Ölpest) in the golf of Mexico (Golf von Mexiko) U.S. President Barack Obama has demanded a changing views in the energy  policy (Energiepolitik ) In a speech to the nation he declared the use of clean energies (sauberer Energien) a "national mission". The time of cheap oil was drawing to the end, Obama said in his first talk from the Oval Office. The U.S. could not afford business as usual, because the long-term costs of fossil fuels for the national economy, for the national safety and for the climate are much higher Obama reminded. He compared the challenge of the "national mission" for clean energy with the prestige laden venture of the manned moon journey in the sixties.

Solar families spend more than energy suppliers

The energy supply in
Germany is increasingly a family affair: Germans last year invested about six billion euros in solar energy alone. That is more than the four major energy suppliers have spent for the construction and expansion of power plants.

Berlin (red) - 2009 households have invested around 6.22 billion euros in solar systems (Solaranlagen). In contrast the four large energy supply companies invested into new plants for the current and district heating production and the development of old plants together investments of only about 4.28 billion euros. According to a Forsa survey, ten percent of all homeowners are planning over the next two years to install a solar system (Solaranlage) for electricity or heat. "Families think of the future. The high popularity of solar energy alone shows that the population is already in a big way on clean technologies" said Carsten Körnig, Managing Director of the Federal Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar).

Commitment from the younger generations

According to the survey prefer 73 percent of homeowners in
Germany want to produce their energy on their own. In particular, young parents are active when it comes to their own energy supply. Already 20 percent of homeowners have a solar energy to electricity or heat. Two-thirds of families with children are convinced that future generations will be able to gain heat and electricity (Strom) exclusively from renewable energies, so the survey.

Stuttgart researchers are developing high-efficiency solar cell

 Stuttgart (ddp / red)

Stuttgart researchers have established the development of a new highly efficient solar cell, a world record. The scientists seem to have developed a solar cell with an unparalleled high efficiency, bringing the current yield of a plant could be significantly improved. Germany is increasingly a family affair: Germans last year invested about six billion euros in solar energy alone. That is more than the four major energy suppliers have spent for the construction and expansion of power plants.

- Scientists at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wuerttemberg (ZSW) developed so-called thin-film solar cells with 20.1 percent efficiency, as announced on Thursday ZSW in Stuttgart. With the high efficiency the current yield and thus the yield of photovoltaic systems will improve significantly. The U.S. research institute NREL was leading in the technology for 16 years before.

Commercially available modules of thin film solar cells have an average degree of effectiveness from ten to twelve per cent at their disposal according to the details. The U.S. research institute NREL which held the "world's record title" for 16 years had produced a solar cell with the degree of effectiveness of 20 per cent in 2008.

.
In comparison with standard solar cells the thin film photovoltaic developed by the Stuttgart researchers now saves material and costs by an extremely thin coating. The area of the cell is the world record claims to 0.5 square centimeters and the total cell is only about four thousandths of a millimeter thick. At the production the electrical and visual qualities must be coordinated with each other very well - an extremely difficult process.

The next development step is the way to industrial application, the report said. However, it still will last for some time until the rise of the degree of effectiveness can be realized commercially.

Industry- and fast-developing nations want to stop waste of energy

 http://www.afp.com

Large industry and fast-developing nations want to stop the waste of energy by inefficient equipment and systems. At the conclusion of a two-day ministerial conference in Washington 21 states agreed on Tuesday to eleven initiatives to save energy by power saving home appliances, better isolated houses or consumption poor cars. This implemented the renunciation of over 500 medium-sized power stations is possible within the next two decades worldwide, said U.S. energy secretary Steven Chu.

Democrats in the U.S. senate put Obama's climate law on ice

http://www.afp.com

The democrats have put the energy and climate protection law of president Barack Obama on ice because of missing majorities in the U.S. senate for the time being. No opposition republican who wants to vote for the law has been found till now, the democratic senator Harry Reid said in Washington. The republicans could block the plan with her blocking minority in the parliament chamber with that.

Obama had taken up his office with the claim that the USA should take a leading role at the climate protection. The law already passed in the House of Representatives to this shall promote clean energies and introduce particularly a system of the issue trade. However, the republicans decline the latter strictly. Since they have 41 of the 100 seats in the senate, they could paralyze the legislation method with a permanent talk called "Filibuster".

Because of the resistance in the senate, Reid presented a considerably smaller bill now. Among other things he contains regulations which shall make sure that the British oil company BP pays for the damages of the oil pollution financially in the golf of Mexico. Furthermore the law shall intensify the safety regulations at oil drillings and promote the use of natural gas to reduce America's dependence of the oil.

Reid emphasized his law isn't a substitute for the climate and energy reform striven by Obama. "We don't bring in this bill to place of a more extensive plan", he said. "But we don't let put the opportunity on to remind BP of his responsibility and to reduce our dependence opposite the oil."

The democratic senator John Kerry announced to support together with the independent senator Joe Lieberman it further, to bring the necessary 60 votes for an extensive climate legislation together. The work on it could start after the summer break and still before the convention elections in November. Obama's climate adviser Carol Browner promised: "We will further work with the senators to work out a complete law plan."

VW plans to build small house power plants with electricity company

Lichtblick from Hamburg

The carmaker Volkswagen and the eco-plan providers ray of hope appears to the production of mini-power plants. They should run in normal houses. Besides heating and hot water systems can therefore electricity generated and fed into the grid.
Electricity in their basement: the car company Volkswagen wants a "Spiegel" report suggests that building for the green electricity provider bright spot gas-powered mini power plants. The small plants will be installed in thousands of normal residential basements.
An exclusive contract should be signed.
When the aggregates are to natural gas engines from the VW Golf, to be built at the
Salzgitter plant. Much of what was needed for the production of mini power plants was also present in modern cars, "said plant manager Rudolf cancer.
According to "Spiegel" the engines have an efficiency of 94 percent, while nuclear plants are, for example to 30 to 40 percent. The new mini-power plants are to provide heat in the basement for heating and hot water. At the same time, the plants can inject enormous amounts of electricity to the public network, such as the magazine reported. This should then happen if the market there is a high demand for electricity.
Because of the rapid response times could be tens of thousands of systems linked together quickly. This would at least two large nuclear power plants or be replaced. In Salzgitter should run at least 10,000 plants per year from the tape.
Volkswagen already has experience in energy production. Thus, the group operates at plants in
Wolfsburg, Kassel, Hanover, Emden and Mlada Boleslav cogeneration plants and provides his work with electricity.
Bright spot claims to be, with over 500,000 customers, the largest independent power companies from energy suppliers in
Germany. The company promotes clean energy. At VW and light at first glance no spokesman could be reached for comment.
